The Law of Attraction meant nothing to me when I was 20.
The law of attraction was not a term being used when I was 20 years old – but I was soon to learn its power. I was living away from home, and visited my mother in Melbourne. Together we sat down and watched a popular TV show of the day – an American program called “The Sonny and Cher Show”, featuring the two famous singers. Each week there was a guest appearance, and this week Cher introduced a young singer from the United Kingdom who was sweeping the pop charts worldwide. His name was Gilbert O’Sullivan.
I was transfixed! This handsome, dark-haired man with green eyes sat down at the piano and played a simple, moving song. Everything about Gilbert was right. He appeared modest, friendly, talented…in short, I was totally smitten! But there was something else. I felt deeply that if ever Gilbert and I were to meet, we would be friends. We would like each other as people.
The likelihood of us meeting was Zero – but I was about to learn what the term “Manifest Your Destiny” meant!
The chances of Gilbert O’Sullivan and I meeting up were next to impossible. I was a young girl living in Australia. I had never traveled. Gilbert was a world-famous pop star living in England. End of story! But the feeling I had that we could be friends, persisted. It was a feeling that went deep, and I believed it profoundly.
Life continued and when I turned 21, I inherited a little money from my father – enough to travel overseas. Where would I go? London was the first port of call, being an English speaking country. With no contacts and no job, I packed my bags and off I went.
London was expensive, and I quickly realized I needed to find a job. I bought a newspaper and read the ads. “Secretary to the Stars” jumped out at me. The ad was for a position at a theatrical agency call MAM Limited. I didn’t really know what a theatrical agency was, but the job sounded exciting and I applied in writing. Amazingly, I was called in for an interview and hired on the spot.
I met many lovely people there – all theatrical agents for performers of many different kinds, some very famous, others not so well known, but all very talented. There were variety acts, singers, comedians and dancers. I used to love getting visits from an agent called Jerry. He was Gilbert O’Sullivan’s agent and he kindly gave me several of Gilbert’s record albums. One day he came into the small office where I was working and invited me to meet Gilbert himself – backstage at a concert that was opening that night in London. I was flabbergasted!
That night in the dressing room, there were many glamorous people. I hardly knew anyone. I was also very shy, and after being introduced to Gilbert, stood back rather nervously in a corner of the room. I will never know why, but later Jerry came up and said, “Gilbert would like you to come to supper with all of us after the show.” Again, I was flabbergasted. I watched the show from the side of the stage, and was completely smitten once again, two years after seeing Gilbert on TV for the first time.
Afterwards, a group of us went to a very elegant restaurant and I sat next to Gilbert. My hand was shaking so much that I couldn’t lift my soup spoon without spilling the contents, so I pretended I wasn’t hungry. Finally, I overcame my shyness and nerves, and Gilbert and I chatted.
After supper, Gilbert had his chauffeur drive me home to a little apartment I shared with 3 other girls – all huge Gilbert O’Sullivan fans. Together with his brother and chauffeur, Gilbert came up for a cup of tea at about 3 in the morning. I woke my flatmates and they all staggered down in various stages of dress, excited about this huge event! During the evening, a mouse ran across the floor, to my embarrassment. Worse still, Gilbert went to the loo in our flat, and we girls exchanged glances. The toilet was lined with photographs of Gilbert I’d brought home from the agency. Not a word was said when he returned.
I spent most of the night talking to Gilbert’s chauffeur, who looked a little bit lonely. The group finally left, after a fun and relaxed cup of tea.
A few weeks later, I received a call from Jerry. “Gilbert would like to invite you to dinner and will phone you tomorrow.” Unbelievable! I sat by the phone almost the entire day until the phone call came. Gilbert was sending his chauffeur to get me, and asked me to pick up a bottle of red wine on the way.
I dined with Gilbert at his mansion in Surrey that evening, cooking him a rather stringy cheese omelet. We drank wine and talked of how we had each lost a parent, what it meant to us, and other life-related things. After dinner, Gilbert made cocoa, which we sipped on the couch until the early hours while we listened to Frank Sinatra records.
It was the most incredible evening of my life! Gilbert was everything I had imagined him to be – and more. He was a complete gentleman, a dear person, and a lovely human being. I stayed in his guest room, and the next day he had his chauffeur drive me back to London.
The law of attraction had worked its magic, starting from those first thoughts back in Australia.
I hadn’t heard of law of attraction books or anything like a law of attraction cd (in fact, cds hadn’t been invented back then!) Yet the law of attraction had worked its magic. Gilbert and I met on and off after that time, and Gilbert introduced me to other members of his family. Just as I had imagined all that time ago, we had got along famously and become friends!
